The Venetian walls
Unesco Heritage
More than 6 km long, the Venetian walls offer breathtaking views and romantic routes for those who enjoy walking surrounded by history. Their construction triggered eight excommunications by the local clergy, but it was worth it: today Bergamo's monumental walls are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The walls consist of 14 bastions, 2 storeys, 32 sentry boxes, 100 openings for gun ports, two powder magazines, 4 gates (Sant'Agostino, San Giacomo, the most beautiful with a panoramic view, Sant'Alessandro and San Lorenzo with Porta Garibaldi).
The Academy of Carrara
A cult place for art history lovers, the Academy of Carrara houses 1793 paintings bearing the name of artists such as Pisanello, Mantegna, Bellini and many others. You can admire some of the most famous sculptures created by Bernini, Domenico Guidi, Filippo Parodi and Giovan Francesco Arrighi.
During the visit, we also recommend that you visit the historical library, the most important part of which contains books that belonged to Giacomo Carrara.
Funicular to San Vigilio
If you want to visit one of Bergamo's hills, take the funicular railway which, with its postcard-perfect views, will take you to a height of 500 metres where you can admire the city from above. We recommend a stop at the San Vigilio café to enjoy the view while sipping a good glass of local wine.
Bergamo Alta
The old square of Bergamo Alta is one of the main attractions for tourists and locals. A perfect harmony of historical buildings such as the Palazzo della Regione and the Torre Civica, the hub of the city's political power. Passing through the Portico from Piazza della Regione you come to Piazza del Duomo, home to the church of the same name, the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore and the Colleoni Chapel.
